Jesus Further Trains the Twelve
Lesson 8 Mark 9:9—10:52
December 10, 2023
Objectives: To: (1) put greater faith in God’s power; (2) seek greatness in the Kingdom by serving others; and (3) find our self-worth in God’s love rather than in possessions.
- Jesus Comes Down from the Mountain (9:9-29) Coming down from the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus talked to Peter, James, and John about His own death and about John the Baptist’s death. Afterward, the four came across the other disciples, who had tried unsuccessfully to cast out a demon from a boy. Jesus casted out the demon Himself.
Ask Yourself … What does my prayer life say about my faith in Christ?
- Jesus Teaches about Greatness (9:30-50) In Galilee, Jesus again predicted His death. But the disciples were more concerned about their personal status. Jesus told them they must learn to be servants of all, sensitive to the needs of even the weakest members of the Kingdom. Furthermore, He advised them to take drastic action, if necessary, to keep from sin’s entanglements.
What action did Jesus advise to keep from sin’s entanglements?
- Jesus Teaches about Marriage and Children (10:1-16) The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus with a question about divorce. Jesus responded by emphasizing that God designed marriage to unite two people in a lifelong relationship. Later, when people brought their children to Jesus for His blessing, He welcomed them gladly—in spite of the disciples’ initial protest.
Why is the attitude of a child a model for trusting God more completely?
- Jesus Warns about Wealth 10:17-31) A rich young man came to Jesus asking how to obtain eternal life. Jesus challenged him to give up what he valued most: his wealth. To the confused disciples, Jesus emphasized the difficulty of spiritual commitment when the heart is entangled with money.
What practical steps can Christians take to resist the pull of materialism?
Besides wealth, what else might interfere with a person’s commitment to Christ?
- Jesus Teaches and Models Servanthood (10:32-52) Jesus predicted His death a third time. Then James and John came to Him with a request for privilege that led Jesus to teach again about servanthood. Finally, Jesus modeled servanthood by healing a blind beggar.
Ask Yourself … How can I better serve others?
